Deferring Your child's Entry into Reception - Information and Process

Parents of summer born children (those born between 1 April and 31 August) may choose to request that their child starts school a year later than their normal age group, entering Reception in the September following their fifth birthday.

Further Information

Making a Request for Admission Outside of the Normal Age Group

After reading the Department for Education and Redbridge's guidance, you may decide that you would like your child to start school in a Reception class in the September after their fifth birthday.

If this is the case, it is important that you request admission outside of the normal age group in writing to Winston Way Academy at the time of making your reception application (typically 15 January each year).

Reception applications open in September each year, with a closing date of 15 January each year

How to Make a Request to Winston Way Academy:

When making your written request to the school, you should include:

  • Your child’s full name and date of birth
  • Confirmation that you are requesting admission outside of the normal age group
  • Information about your child’s development, emotional maturity, and readiness for school
  • Any relevant medical, social, or educational evidence that supports your request
  • Your reasons for believing that starting Reception a year later would be in your child’s best interests

Each request is considered on an individual basis, taking into account the needs of the child and guidance from the Department for Education.  Decisions are made collaboratively with the local authority according to child's best interest.

If you require further advice or support before submitting your request, please contact the school office.
